via the fountain
Description
Via the fountain is an exploration of the form of a viaduct that carries water across topography from one point to another. The fountain explores how water can be an interface between human and water, via the fountain. The position of our proposal is not central, which would deprive it of other activities. Ergonomically, being able to drink water in different ways, sitting and standing is an important part of the project. It is an ode to the Victorian fountain, using steps to access water. The fountain was placed across the Garden's terraces to create a seating area around itself, carrying the water at a single level across. At the end of the viaduct the water drops into the yard, emphasising its sonic quality. The fountain acknowledges the act of collective drinking, drawing on the spirit of the trough associated with the history of English fountains. As an object, the fountain is constructed using a rat trap bond, made famous by Laurie Baker. In this bond, bricks are laid on edge, creating a continuous external hollow form. The efficiency of the bond emphasises the linearity of the fountain. Using readymade objects such as found bricks, pipes, and a tap, the life-size fountain was built in the courtyard of Architectural Assocation (AA) in London.
